A meditation on the pure expression of beauty.

“Starlings, Darling” came about while working on a separate piece, “From Trayvon to Antwon”, in order to create a vision of Blackness that is joyously beautiful to counter the pain inherent in the aforementioned work. This piece features a favored species of bird, the titular Starling. While not the most graceful or luxurious bird, the small flecks of gold within its feathers made me think about accessible luxury and how beauty can be found in everyday life.

“Starlings, Darling” was created using full-body acrylic paint on a 24” x 36” gallery-wrapped canvas. It features a Black woman in a blue dress and adorned with gold jewelry standing on balcony overlooking the city sunset, two starling birds resting on her back and fingers.
